Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL), an 83-year-old congresswoman from Florida, has been absent from voting in the House of Representatives for weeks without providing an explanation.

Wilson, who reportedly told allies in her district she intends to seek re-election, has not cast a vote since April 17. As of Wednesday, she had missed 43 consecutive House votes.

There had been speculation that Wilson, following major eye surgery, was considering retirement. However, Florida state Sen. Shevrin Jones confirmed during a recent phone call that Wilson plans to seek another term. “What she just told me is that she’s running for reelection … she’s not retiring,” Jones stated.

Known for her bedazzled outfits and matching cowboy hats, Wilson has represented Miami in the Florida House of Representatives since 1998, serving in both the state legislature and Congress.

Wilson recently held a fundraiser in Miami. A source at the event noted that “the woman I saw on Monday didn’t look like she was retiring.”

Despite her absence from Capitol Hill, Wilson remains active on social media. She posted about hosting a Service Academy Day at Florida International University: “As students plan their futures, service through a U.S. Service Academy remains a powerful path to leadership, discipline, and opportunity. I was proud to host a Service Academy Day at FIU, bringing together representatives to share guidance with the next generation. For nomination information, visit my website or call my office.”

Wilson has not publicly explained her absence, and neither her office nor House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ office has responded to inquiries about her whereabouts.

Rep. Thomas Kean Jr., R-N.J., who missed 68 votes since his last vote on March 5, is also under scrutiny as he prepares for the upcoming election.
