Republican Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas has announced he will not seek reelection in 2026, ending a 20-year tenure in Congress. McCaul, who currently serves on the House Committee on Homeland Security and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, stated he will complete his current term but is pursuing “a new challenge.”

McCaul cited his father’s service in World War II as inspiration for his career in public office, emphasizing his dedication to national security and foreign policy. He highlighted his work in Congress, including chairing key committees, and expressed readiness to continue serving the country in a different capacity after 2027.

A separate incident from last year involved McCaul being detained at Dulles International Airport after appearing disoriented. Authorities reported he had taken Ambien mixed with alcohol, leading to confusion and a temporary detention. Police assisted him after he explained the situation, and he was later picked up by a family member. No arrests were made.
