Tornadoes struck southeastern Utah over the weekend, destroying three homes and causing significant damage amid unusual weather conditions. The Navajo Police Department confirmed the destruction, noting that no injuries were reported but an unspecified number of livestock and pets went missing.
The storms occurred near Montezuma Creek, a remote area close to the Colorado border, with images shared by authorities depicting a towering tornado engulfed by dark clouds. One photograph showed the wreckage of a completely flattened home. Meteorologist Kris Sanders highlighted the rarity of such events in the region, stating that only two tornadoes had been officially recorded in southeastern Utah since 1950.
The National Weather Service is expected to conduct a survey Monday to determine the exact paths and wind speeds of the storms. The Navajo Nation President, Buu Nygren, acknowledged the damage in a social media post, emphasizing the impact on the community.
The incident follows the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk in Utah, though no direct connection has been established between the two events.
