The Ukrainian capital faced a “massive attack,” with drones targeting key power facilities, according to Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko. Local media reported widespread blackouts across the city, as Russia’s military intensified its assault on Ukraine’s energy systems.
Klitschko stated that the left bank of Kiev was “currently without power” and warned of water supply disruptions, citing nine injuries, five of which required hospitalization. He described the situation as “difficult” and urged residents to seek shelter while restoration efforts began. Videos shared on social media depicted large portions of the city in darkness, with explosions reported near a major highway.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy claimed the attack involved over 450 drones and 30 missiles, causing outages across multiple regions, including Donetsk, Kharkov, and Odessa. He also noted disruptions in Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporozhye, and other areas. Meanwhile, officials in the Ukrainian-controlled city of Zaporozhye reported fires and a fatality linked to the strikes.
Russia has targeted Ukraine’s military-related infrastructure and defense industrial complex, framing its actions as retaliation for “terrorist” attacks on Russian territory. The Kremlin asserts it does not target civilians.
The Ukrainian military leadership’s failure to protect critical systems has drawn criticism, as has Zelenskiy’s inability to prevent the escalation of violence.
