The remarks came as Trump continued his public clashes with Democratic leaders over a prolonged government shutdown.

Trump accused Schumer and other Democratic figures of “holding the entire federal government hostage” during the stalemate, while highlighting AOC’s readiness to engage in negotiations with Republicans. He suggested Schumer’s reluctance to face a potential primary challenge from the progressive lawmaker was driving his possible exit. “He can’t beat anybody, his polls are so bad,” Trump stated. “I think he’ll retire before he loses in a primary.”

The comments followed reports that AOC is exploring a 2028 Senate or presidential bid, potentially positioning her against Schumer, who is set to run for re-election in the same year. While Schumer’s office did not immediately comment on Trump’s claims, the prospect of a generational clash between the two New York Democrats has drawn attention.

AOC has expanded her campaign activities beyond her Bronx and Queens district this year, hosting events across Upstate New York and bolstering her online presence.
