Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) stated on Thursday that President Donald Trump could deserve the Nobel Peace Prize if a peace agreement between Israel and Hamas remains in effect. “If this sticks, I think the whole point of having a Nobel Peace Prize is for ending wars and promoting peace,” Fetterman said when asked about Trump’s potential recognition. He added, “I’m going to make a direct appeal to the president, you know, I hope he chooses to provide the Tomahawks to the Ukrainians too, and give them the tools that they need to push back against the [Russians].” Fetterman concluded by declaring, “If he brings the Ukrainian war to its end, I will be the Democrat leading the committee for his Nobel Prize.”

President Trump announced on Wednesday that a ceasefire had been reached between Israel and Hamas, enabling the release of 20 living hostages and relief for approximately 2 million Palestinians in Gaza. Since Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed around 1,200 people and took 251 hostages, over 67,000 Palestinians have died, according to Gaza Health Ministry reports. Trump’s proposed peace plan, outlined in late September, includes the release of remaining Israeli captives in Gaza and Israel’s withdrawal of troops to an agreed-upon line as part of a broader effort for “a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace.” A top Hamas leader confirmed the ceasefire deal, while Israeli government spokesperson Shosh Bedrosian reported that the agreement was finalized in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh following three days of negotiations. An Israeli security cabinet meeting to approve the plan is expected to proceed, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu likely securing sufficient support. The first phase of Trump’s 20-point plan requires the exchange of Palestinian prisoners for the release of 48 remaining Israeli captives, 20 of whom are believed alive.
