A Los Angeles-bound American Airlines flight operated by SkyWest Airlines made an emergency return to Omaha, Nebraska, shortly after takeoff following reports of unusual activity near the cockpit. The incident occurred when pilots lost communication with the cabin crew and heard banging on the cockpit door.
Passengers described the chaotic scene as the Embraer ERJ 175 regional jet banked sharply over Omaha. A traveler accompanying his wife and daughter recounted, “My wife noticed the stewardess was banging on the cockpit door, like, OK, what’s going on?” Police boarded the aircraft after it landed but provided no immediate explanation to passengers.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) later stated the issue stemmed from a malfunction in the inter-phone system, with flight crew members attempting to contact the cockpit. SkyWest Airlines apologized for the disruption, citing a “flight crew mic” problem. The plane eventually resumed its journey to Los Angeles nearly five hours late.
The captain addressed passengers after the situation was resolved, explaining, “We weren’t sure if something was going on with the airplane, so that’s why we’re coming back here.” The flight had traveled only 40 miles of its 1,300-mile route when the incident occurred.
