Bari Weiss, the newly appointed editor-in-chief of CBS News, is reportedly exploring major changes in her initial weeks on the job. Reports suggest she is evaluating prominent figures to lead the network’s flagship evening news program. Bret Baier, a high-profile figure in the industry, is among those named as a potential candidate.
Weiss assumed her role after acquiring a publication for $150 million in early October. The move, initially highlighted by a journalist, may not occur immediately, as Baier remains under contract with his current employer through 2028 at an annual salary of $14 million, according to industry reports. Baier has served as a key anchor for over a decade, transitioning from various roles within the organization.
Weiss established her publication in 2021 after leaving a previous position at a major news outlet in 2020 amid controversy surrounding an op-ed by a Republican senator. The platform, initially a newsletter, has since evolved significantly.
“CBS Evening News” is currently co-hosted by John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois following the departure of Norah O’Donnell as anchor in January. Ratings for the program have declined since her exit, averaging 4.1 million viewers per episode compared to O’Donnell’s previous average of 4.8 million.
Weiss has been engaging with staff members and reporters to implement changes, including potential shifts in the show’s format. The program, now resembling a magazine-style broadcast, focuses on extended segments rather than breaking news. Names such as Tony Dokoupil have also been mentioned as possibilities for leadership roles.
The network’s restructuring efforts aim to revitalize its evening programming, though challenges remain in restoring previous viewership levels.
