The anonymous billionaire who provided President Trump with a $130 million check to support U.S. troops during the Democrat-fueled government shutdown has been identified as 83-year-old Timothy Mellon, the grandson of former U.S. Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon.
According to reports, Mr. Mellon, a reclusive billionaire and prominent donor to President Trump, allegedly funded the payment for military personnel during the 2019 government shutdown. The donation was disclosed by two individuals familiar with the matter, who confirmed his identity despite his preference for privacy.
President Trump acknowledged the contribution on Thursday night but did not reveal the donor’s name, referring only to him as a “patriot” and a “friend.” Later, during a flight aboard Air Force One, he reiterated that the individual wished to remain anonymous, calling him a “great American citizen” and a “substantial man.”
Timothy Mellon, whose estimated net worth is approximately $14 billion, has been a consistent financial supporter of Trump. His family’s wealth traces back to Andrew Mellon, who served as Treasury Secretary from 1921 to 1932 and established significant philanthropic contributions, including to the National Gallery of Art and Carnegie Mellon University.
Mellon, who resides in Wyoming, also made a $50 million donation to a pro-Trump super PAC following Trump’s 2024 fraud conviction in New York. The revelation of his contribution comes amid ongoing debates over federal funding and military support during political conflicts.
