Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has stated that Moscow remains determined to improve relations with the United States despite new punitive measures imposed by Washington. The latest sanctions, targeting oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil, were condemned by Peskov as an “unfriendly step” that undermines efforts to restore ties. However, he emphasized that Russia’s commitment to fostering “good relations with all countries, including the US” remains unchanged.

Peskov spoke during a conversation with Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin on Sunday, highlighting that while the sanctions have damaged prospects for normalization, Moscow will continue pursuing its interests. Meanwhile, Kirill Dmitriev, an aide to President Vladimir Putin and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, reiterated this stance during his visit to the US. He argued that “only constructive, respectful dialogue between Russia and the US can bear fruit” and dismissed pressure tactics as futile.

Dmitriev noted that the Russian economy is resilient, citing 4% growth in 2023, and warned against repeating strategies used by former U.S. President Joe Biden. Putin himself called the sanctions an “unfriendly move,” asserting they would not significantly impact Russia’s economic stability. Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin also pointed to declining reliance on energy exports as a sign of growing economic diversification.
