For over 17 years, Satoshi Nakamoto has remained an anonymous figure in the cryptocurrency world. The true identity of Bitcoin’s creator has long been shrouded in mystery since its debut on Halloween 2008.
An investigation involving artificial intelligence and linguistic analysis recently claimed that Adam Back, a 55-year-old British computer scientist, is Satoshi Nakamoto. According to reports, Back pioneered decentralized digital currency systems and used cryptographic techniques foundational to Bitcoin—including the Hashcash algorithm cited in the original Bitcoin whitepaper. The investigation suggests Back’s writing style bears striking similarities to Satoshi’s, leading researchers to conclude they are identical individuals.
Back has vehemently denied the claim. In a public statement, he asserted: “I’m not Satoshi” and added, “I also don’t know who Satoshi is, and I think it is good for Bitcoin that this is the case, as it helps Bitcoin be viewed a new asset class.” When questioned by media outlets in 2024, Back shifted uncomfortably and refused to confirm his identity, citing discomfort with public scrutiny.
Back, educated at the University of Exeter and founder of Blockstream, has been involved with Bitcoin since its inception. His work on Hashcash—developed in 1997—became the basis for Bitcoin’s mining process. Despite years of efforts to conceal his identity, including allegedly sending emails from both his own name and Satoshi’s, Back remains steadfast in his denial that he is the cryptocurrency’s creator.
