Ford Motor Company is recalling nearly 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks due to a gearshift issue that increases the likelihood of a crash. The automaker has reported two injuries and one accident potentially linked to the problem.
The recall covers F-150 light trucks with a six-speed automatic transmission manufactured between March 12, 2014, and August 18, 2017.
NHTSA reports that some vehicles may experience an intermittent signal from the transmission range sensor to the powertrain control module. This could cause a temporary, unintended downshift into second gear, resulting in an abrupt reduction in wheel speed that might lead to rear tire slippage until vehicle speed decreases.
Ford has acknowledged 444 warranty claims and 105 customer service reports associated with the issue as of early this month.
Dealers will update the powertrain control module software at no cost, according to NHTSA. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are scheduled for mailing on April 27, 2026. Additional correspondence will follow once the final remedy is available, expected by July 2026.
Additionally, vehicle owners may observe an illuminated malfunction indicator light or wrench symbol on their dashboard if the transmission range sensor issue persists.
