President Trump’s administration has designated 11 Cuban government officials and three security agencies for sanctions, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Monday.

The targets include Cuba’s Directorate of Intelligence, the Revolutionary National Police, and the Ministry of Interior. Specific individuals sanctioned are Cuba’s ministers of justice, energy and mines, and communications; as well as the chief of staff of the Cuban army and military counterintelligence.

The sanctions block any assets these entities may hold or that come into contact with the U.S. financial system. Many of those designated had previously been subject to U.S. sanctions.

A State Department spokesperson signaled further action: “The United States will continue to take action to counter the Cuban regime, those furthering its goals, and those abroad enabling the elites to profit while the Cuban people suffer.”

The administration characterized these measures as advancing a comprehensive campaign against Cuba’s communist regime.
