Rep. Thomas Kean Jr. (R-NJ), who has missed over 135 roll call votes since March 5, has disclosed his return to Congress on June 30.

His political advisor stated the representative is “eager to return to in-person work” and resume a full schedule for that date.

Kean’s congressional office described him as “dealing with a personal health matter” and “focused on his recovery” during his absence from the House. The absence has lasted just under four months, though the specific health situation remains unclear.

House ethics filings show Kean signed off on two congressional “gift travel” disclosures during this time. The first disclosure, dated March 14, stated that his chief of staff, Dan Scharfenberger, traveled to an event in Las Vegas funded by the Republican Main Street Partnership and that the trip was “in connection with the employee’s official duties.” A second disclosure, signed on April 13, covered a trip by Scharfenberger to Middleburg, Virginia for a “spring issues conference” sponsored by Center Forward.

Kean’s office acknowledged requests for comment but did not provide additional details about who signed the documents. Kean’s chief of staff, Dan Scharfenberger, has publicly praised Kean during his absence.

Kean represents New Jersey’s 7th district, where he is facing a competitive race against Democrat Rebecca Bennett.
