President Trump will jointly present the World Cup trophy to this year’s champions during the final in New Jersey on July 19. The ceremony will take place at MetLife Stadium, home of the NFL’s New York Jets and Giants.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed that Trump and himself will jointly present the trophy to the captain of the winning team. This arrangement follows a similar presentation for the FIFA Club World Cup last summer, where Trump presented the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James after their victory over Paris Saint-Germain in New Jersey.

At the Qatar 2022 and Russia 2018 World Cups under Infantino’s leadership, the FIFA president has traditionally presented the trophy. However, Trump’s participation marks a shift as he becomes one of several heads of state to have presented the trophy in recent tournaments.

Trump was allowed to present the trophy at the Chelsea victory but had to remain on stage due to his failure to leave immediately, leading him to join the team in celebrations with some bemusement from players. Infantino previously presented Trump with FIFA’s inaugural Peace Prize during the World Cup draw at Washington, D.C.’s John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Trump is known as an avid sports fan and has recently attended major sporting events including the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, a University of Alabama football game, and a UFC fight on the White House lawn. Infantino has emphasized building a partnership with Trump, stating: “You can always count, Mr. President, on my support, on the support of the entire soccer community to help you make peace and make the world prosper.”

The U.S. men’s national team is off to its best World Cup start in recent memory, having won its first two group stage matches and secured a spot in the knockout rounds.
