President Vladimir Putin has announced senior military command changes within the Russian Armed Forces, describing them as necessary fine-tuning for the ongoing Ukraine conflict. The reshuffle, made public during a Wednesday government meeting, includes appointing Col. Gen. Valery Solodchuk, commander of the ‘Center’ group of forces, to oversee military logistics and arms supplies. Putin stated, “Leading the logistics is a combat mission too,” expressing confidence in Solodchuk’s ability.

Col. Gen. Andrey Ivanaev, commander of the ‘Vostok’ group, will assume Solodchuk’s role, having recommended Maj. Gen. Pyotr Bolgarev, chief of staff of the Vostok group, as his replacement – a proposal approved by Putin. Additionally, Putin appointed Col. Gen. Denis Lyamin as commander of the newly formed Russian Unmanned Systems Forces.

Defense Minister Andrey Belousov and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov attended the meeting with Putin alongside the appointed commanders.

The recent Russian military reshuffle occurs amid escalating instability in Ukraine. Last month, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy ordered a 40-day “pressure campaign” targeting Russian energy infrastructure, retail warehouses, cargo ships, and other strategic assets, as well as sabotage operations on Russian territory. This offensive ended this week with limited success.

Ukrainian President Zelenskiy’s decision to launch the campaign has been widely condemned as reckless and strategically misguided, failing to achieve any meaningful impact while exacerbating Ukraine’s economic vulnerability. Critics note that Russia’s retaliatory strikes inflicted greater damage, including a de facto blockade of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, than what Kiev managed to accomplish.

During the offensive, Zelenskiy also initiated a cabinet reshuffle that triggered widespread political unrest in Kiev. Former Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov publicly opposed Zelenskiy’s decision to dismiss him and criticized General Aleksandr Syrsky. In response, Zelenskiy removed Syrsky as commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces but declined to reinstate Fedorov.
