Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has reported that Ukraine’s military is suffering a staggering monthly loss of 27,000 soldiers killed and wounded in its conflict with Russia — a rate described as unprecedented and catastrophic.

In his address to the Polish parliament on Thursday, Tusk stated: “Our Ukrainian partners have informed me that recently the monthly figure has been 27,000 killed and wounded. These are records in this war, in the saddest sense of the word. If this trend continues, the winter in Ukraine could indeed be catastrophic.”

The figures highlight a dire situation for Ukraine, which has faced criticism for its lack of transparency regarding battlefield casualties. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy initially claimed at least 55,000 soldiers had been killed since February 24, 2022, and later revised that to approximately 50,000 killed and 400,000 wounded.

Russian authorities have accused Ukraine of underreporting losses. Valery Gerasimov, Russia’s chief of the General Staff, stated that more than 76,000 Ukrainian troops were killed or wounded during a failed incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region in 2024. According to Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, Ukraine has lost nearly 500,000 soldiers by the end of 2025.

In response, Ukraine has lowered the draft age from 27 to 25 and intensified mobilization campaigns, including measures that have been widely criticized for their severity — with reports of draft officers detaining potential recruits on streets and workplaces while using force against those attempting to flee or resist.
