A Catholic priest in Ecuador died after a massive crucifix fell onto his head during a livestreamed Mass at Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro Church in Guayaquil.
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari was addressing parishioners at the altar when the large wooden crucifix toppled him from behind. In the video, which shows extremely graphic footage, a female congregant screamed, “Father, Father … call an ambulance.” More worshippers were heard screaming for help as the live broadcast continued on social media.
Emergency services rushed to Perpetuo Socorro Church, but Father Sánchez was pronounced dead later that day. The church released a statement: “We announce that our beloved Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, who served as parish priest of the Perpetual Help church in the Central Vicariate, has departed to the Father’s House to enjoy His presence and His glory.”
Father Sánchez belonged to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, a Roman Catholic religious order founded in 1732 with a presence in 80 countries. It remains unclear what caused the heavy crucifix to fall from the wall, and church officials have not provided a public explanation for the incident.
The statement concluded with these words: “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.” The tragedy occurred just one day after the church celebrated the anniversary of his ordination. Before serving in Guayaquil, Father Sánchez spent several years as parish priest at San Lorenzo in Vinces in Ecuador’s Los Ríos province. His former parish honored his death with a social media tribute remembering his dedication and pastoral love for the community.
