Bryan Johnson has spent years measuring, slowing, and attempting to reverse the aging process. His latest announcement reframes blood exchanges, supplement stacks, and rigorous daily regimens as conventional practices.

“I just cloned myself…as a newborn,” Johnson declared Tuesday, introducing “baby-Bryan.” He stated the project aims to test therapies, inject younger cells, develop treatments, and eventually grow organs for transplantation. Johnson revived his infamous “blood boy” phrase, suggesting the laboratory creation could serve as his own youthful cellular donor.

The announcement echoes science-fiction tropes but adheres to precise biological reality. According to Johnson, the process began with a blood draw. His cells were extracted and exposed to Yamanaka factors, which he claims reset their epigenetic age into an embryonic-like pluripotent state. This describes induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).

Johnson did not identify the laboratory, publish test results, provide assay certificates, or link to independently reviewed research. The reprogramming remains his claim. Crucially, no infant, embryo, fetus, organ, or second human was created. Scientists took mature adult cells and attempted to return them to an earlier developmental stage—a process distinct from cloning a living person.

The term “clone” misrepresents the science. Cells derived from Johnson’s starting material share his genetic origin but do not become copies of him. The National Institutes of Health confirms scientists reprogram specialized adult cells into iPSCs, a technique Nobel laureate Shinya Yamanaka pioneered in 2006 for mice and 2007 for humans.

Pluripotent cells can develop into nerve, heart, blood, or pancreatic cells—enabling disease research and targeted therapies. Yet reprogramming does not create a person; it alters cellular identity without replicating the complex biological systems required for human development.

Johnson’s claim oversells the spectacle while underselling the science. He has not produced a newborn version of himself but rather cells biologically reset through his own blood. These cells could serve as a testing platform for personalized treatments, though transforming them into functional organs remains scientifically distant. Johnson bets regenerative medicine will eventually turn these cells into repairs for aging—yet immense hurdles separate this ambition from reality.
