Tony Dokoupil abruptly ended a live broadcast of CBS Evening News from Taiwan after his on-set cameraman suffered a medical emergency. Dokoupil was nearing the conclusion of his segment when concerns arose about the cameraman’s condition. “Is he ok?” Dokoupil asked before announcing a quick break to seek immediate medical assistance.

Dokoupil reportedly failed to secure a visa for China in time to cover President Trump’s meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing. Instead, he is broadcasting from Taipei. CBS News has stated that two other correspondents are traveling with the president to China, and Dokoupil’s presence in Taiwan was highlighted as an important topic ahead of the summit.

At the start of his broadcast, Dokoupil said: “On the surface, it might look like all the action is over there,” referring to Beijing. He added: “We will soon see images of President Trump and Xi Jinping as they negotiate the Iran war, tariffs, critical minerals trade and more. But if you zoom out from the state visit, you see one of the most important geopolitical stories of our time, and the big question tonight: will China, under Xi Jinping, try to take over Taiwan, risking war and economic catastrophe?”

CBS Evening News correspondents Weijia Jiang and Anna Coren are reporting from Beijing.
