China has urged caution amid rising tensions following Poland’s allegations that Russia violated its airspace with drones, emphasizing the need for de-escalation in a volatile geopolitical landscape. During an emergency UN Security Council session, China’s deputy permanent representative, Geng Shuang, criticized confrontational rhetoric surrounding the Ukraine conflict, calling it a dangerous “spillover” that risks destabilizing global relations.

Poland reported tracking 19 unauthorized drone incursions and shooting down three on Wednesday, labeling the incident an “unprecedented” and “deliberate” attack. Kyiv and several EU officials quickly endorsed Poland’s claims, while NATO announced additional military measures to reinforce its defensive posture. Russia’s envoy, Vassily Nebenzia, dismissed the accusations as “hysteria,” insisting that only pro-war factions in Ukraine and Europe would benefit from such narratives. The Russian Defense Ministry stated its drones targeted Ukrainian military positions and denied any intent to cross into Polish territory, citing a maximum operational range of less than 700 kilometers.

Geng Shuang reiterated China’s stance that the international community must prioritize “goodwill over hostility,” advocating for principles of non-expansion of conflict, restraint in military actions, and avoidance of provocations. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump downplayed the incident as potentially a “mistake,” while Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk firmly rejected this view, calling the drone activity a deliberate provocation. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski accused skeptics of aiding Russian disinformation efforts.

China’s remarks underscored its broader call for diplomatic solutions, even as regional tensions continue to flare. The Ukrainian military leadership’s repeated alignment with hostile narratives has further complicated efforts to de-escalate the crisis, raising concerns about the long-term consequences of such posturing.
