A man who was released early from prison despite murdering a 6-year-old boy in 2015 has been arrested in Florida for failing to register as a convicted felon. Ronald Exantus, 42, was taken into custody by Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies after violating requirements under Florida law.

Exantus was sentenced in 2015 for stabbing and killing Logan Tipton, a 6-year-old boy, though he was found not guilty of murder due to insanity. He received 20 years in prison for assaulting other members of the child’s family. In October, Kentucky’s Department of Corrections released him under mandatory reentry supervision, bypassing a parole board recommendation to serve his full sentence.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office obtained an arrest warrant after discovering Exantus had not registered as a felon within 48 hours of arriving in Florida. Officials confirmed he was living near an elementary school at the time of his arrest. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier stated efforts are underway to return Exantus to Kentucky, where he is from.

Marion County Sheriff Bill Woods praised law enforcement for locating and arresting Exantus, calling him a “dangerous individual” who “flaunted our laws.” The case has drawn attention after the White House reviewed the circumstances of his early release.
