Los Angeles reliever Blake Treinen paid tribute to conservative activist Charlie Kirk during Friday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants by wearing a hat featuring Kirk’s name alongside a cross. The gesture occurred as Treinen entered the ninth inning, drawing attention from fans who noticed the message on his cap.
Kirk, 31, was fatally shot Wednesday at Utah Valley University during a campus event. He was struck by a single bullet and later pronounced dead. Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old Utah resident, was arrested as the suspect in the killing. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox reported that a family member of Robinson contacted authorities with information about a confession or implication of involvement.
Other sports teams also honored Kirk following his death. The Green Bay Packers observed a moment of silence before their game against the Washington Commanders on Thursday night. Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was a prominent ally of former President Donald Trump, who confirmed his death on social media and later expressed “grief and anger” over the assassination. Trump announced plans to posthumously award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
