Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) has declined to switch parties, asserting he will remain a Democrat despite intense efforts from Republicans to encourage such a move.
Reports indicate former President Donald Trump offered Fetterman his “total and complete endorsement” along with financial benefits if he switched to the Republican Party. However, Fetterman has consistently stated that he is not changing his political affiliation. In an interview, he emphasized: “I’m a Democrat, and I’m staying one.” He also characterized his potential shift as incompatible with Democratic principles, stating, “I’d be a shy Republican.”
The senator has voted with Republicans on several occasions, including against war powers resolutions to prohibit President Trump from taking military action against Iran. Fetterman has also faced criticism for his positions on immigration and staunch support for Israel. When approached privately about becoming an independent, he did not outright reject the idea but remained firm in his commitment to the Democratic Party. During a recent interview, Fetterman explained: “I can’t be a Republican because in many other areas, I disagree.”
Fetterman described his relationship with fellow Democrats as “cordial” but admitted he is “not necessarily the popular guy,” noting that he was the first Democrat to flip a seat from Republican control.
