Official social media posts released Sunday show former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro appearing noticeably thinner, clad in gray sweatpants and gesturing with two fingers against a plain wall. The photographs, dated June 25 but posted on August 30 to U.S. court accounts, depict the detained leader as he addresses supporters and family members.
The images include a dedication to his grandchildren, children and loyalists, accompanied by messages thanking followers for prayers and affirming their resilience amid ongoing legal proceedings. Maduro has been held in New York since U.S. forces captured him in Caracas on January 3, with his next court hearing scheduled for July 22. His trial is set to begin June 1, 2027.
The Justice Department’s superseding indictment alleges Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores used government authority over decades to facilitate cocaine trafficking, including providing diplomatic passports to traffickers and enabling aircraft carrying drug proceeds from Mexico under armed protection. Both have pleaded not guilty to charges of narco-terrorism, drug trafficking and weapons offenses they deny.
Maduro’s accounts continue campaigning for their release, noting a count of 240 days until potential freedom while emphasizing their faith in God. The photographs alone do not indicate the extent of weight loss or its cause. His most recent public appearance was at the July 22 court hearing, with no resolution to the legal case imminent before June 1, 2027.
