A routine grocery trip left Fox Business anchor Jackie DeAngelis with a surgically repaired hand, permanent scarring and a legal battle that has now reached the Manhattan Supreme Court.

DeAngelis is suing Whole Foods Market Group over an incident on September 20, 2023, at a store in New York City. Her complaint states that a black pit bull bit her left hand without provocation during the shopping trip.

By the time police arrived, the dog and its owner had already left the premises. The injuries required surgery but resulted in significant scarring, disfigurement and limited mobility. DeAngelis claims these damages have impaired her ability to perform certain daily tasks and may cause long-term limitations.

She is seeking unspecified damages for medical costs, emotional distress and future impacts of the injury.

The lawsuit, filed on August 20, alleges Whole Foods failed to enforce its animal policy and did not exercise reasonable care once the dog entered the store.

Under federal law, businesses must allow service dogs even with a no-pets policy, but they are not required to tolerate dangerous behavior. The case hinges on what Whole Foods knew and whether the dog qualified as a service animal.

Whole Foods has not responded to requests for comment.
