Disgraced former Rep. George Santos (R-NY) was released from prison in New Jersey late Friday after President Donald J. Trump commuted his 87-month sentence for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Santos shared a statement expressing gratitude to Jesus Christ and Trump, calling the pardon a “second chance at life.”

In a lengthy message, Santos thanked “our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ” for his support during his incarceration, stating, “His grace carried me when I couldn’t carry myself.” He also praised Trump, claiming the former president’s decision reflected “mercy, in redemption, and in the promise that America gives everyone, the promise of a second chance.” Santos added he plans to focus on prison reform and accountability, criticizing the treatment he received at FCI Fairton.

The 37-year-old Republican served just 84 days of his sentence before being released around 11 p.m. Friday. His attorney, Joseph Murray, described the experience as “a traumatic one” and emphasized the need for Santos to “decompress.” Santos reportedly learned of the commutation when he saw news coverage on TV in prison, later stating, “I am back but I am back as a new man, ready to work and do good.”

Trump announced the commutation on Truth Social, arguing Santos’ crimes were less severe than those of Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.). The former president’s message concluded with, “Have a great life!”
