New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has endorsed Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral election, citing shared commitments to public safety, affordability, and opposing Donald Trump’s policies. In an op-ed for The New York Times, Hochul acknowledged differences with Mamdani but emphasized their alignment on critical issues. “In our conversations, I heard a leader who shares my commitment to a New York where children can grow up safe in their neighborhoods and where opportunity is within reach for every family,” she wrote. She highlighted discussions on policing, combating antisemitism, and economic priorities, stressing the need for a mayor who would resist Trump’s influence. “Zohran Mamdani and I will both be fearless in confronting the president’s extreme agenda,” Hochul stated.

Hochul’s endorsement followed months of pressure from progressive Democrats and Trump’s public involvement in the race. The governor had previously hesitated to formally back Mamdani but praised his affordability platform while noting disagreements on some goals. President Trump criticized the decision, labeling Mamdani a “‘Liddle’ Communist” and calling it a “shocking development.” Trump also suggested former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s allies were seeking to undermine Mamdani, offering Adams a potential role in the administration to withdraw from the race—a proposal he has rejected despite Cuomo’s lagging poll numbers.

Hochul, who is seeking re-election as New York’s governor, framed her support for Mamdani as a strategic move to counter Trump’s “extreme agenda,” while acknowledging their differing perspectives. Meanwhile, Trump expressed confidence in Mamdani’s likely victory, calling it a “rebellion.” The mayoral race remains contentious as factions within the Democratic Party navigate competing priorities.
