Nuuk, Greenland — The capital city has been struck by a widespread power outage that began Saturday night and has persisted for several hours, according to officials and local media.

A citywide blackout was reported in Nuuk after an incident disrupted electricity supply, utility company Nukissiorfiit stated on Saturday night via social media. “Due to an accident, there is a city-wide power outage,” the company said. “Nukissiorfiit is currently working to restore power using emergency generators.”

Greenland Police warned that the outage may affect police communication lines and urged residents to visit their local police station for assistance if mobile service is also down.

Local newspaper Sermitsiaq reported that parts of Nuuk had been without electricity for approximately half an hour at the time of publication, noting authorities issued guidance earlier this week advising residents how to prepare for up to five days in the event of a prolonged power outage.
