Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey faced a devastating personal loss after his son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren died in a helicopter crash in Montana. The incident occurred late Wednesday night, leaving the campaign and supporters reeling.

Bailey’s campaign released a statement detailing the tragedy: “Darren and his wife, Cindy, received the heartbreaking news no parent ever wants to hear. Their son, Zachary, his wife, Kelsey, and their two young children, Vada Rose, age 12, and Samuel, age 7, tragically lost their lives in a helicopter accident in Montana.” A third grandson, Finn, aged 10, survived as he was not aboard the aircraft.

The Baileys expressed deep grief, stating they found solace in faith and family while asking for privacy during their mourning. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker extended condolences to the family, calling the incident “unimaginable.”

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, with officials confirming an inquiry into a helicopter accident in Ekalaka, Montana. Authorities have not yet determined if this is the same incident.

Bailey, who previously ran for governor against Pritzker in 2022, faced scrutiny during that campaign when a Chicago man was charged with sending death threats targeting him. The attacker, Scott Lennox, allegedly threatened to “mutilate and kill” Bailey in a voicemail.

The Baileys’ tragedy has drawn widespread sympathy, with calls for prayers and support as they navigate their loss.
