A member of the Bush family has officially announced a bid for governor of Maine, positioning himself as a potential challenger to Democratic incumbent Janet Mills. Jonathan Bush, nephew of former President George H.W. Bush and cousin of George W. Bush, revealed his campaign on Wednesday, aiming to unseat Mills in the 2022 election.

Bush, a healthcare entrepreneur, transitioned from a career in health technology to politics after co-founding and leading athenahealth, which he exited in 2018 amid a hedge fund takeover. The departure followed revelations of his past domestic violence allegations. He currently serves as CEO of Zus Health, a company established in 2020.

His candidacy enters a competitive Republican primary race, where several contenders are vying for the nomination. Democrats will select from Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, former Senate President Troy Jackson, and Angus King III, son of former Maine Governor Angus King.

Bush has framed his campaign around economic revitalization, claiming to bring 1,000 jobs to the Midcoast region through his business ventures. He advocates for a $1 billion income tax cut, a state budget audit, and expanded natural gas access, labeling Maine’s economy as facing an “emergency.”

The Republican field includes eight candidates: lawyer Bobby Charles, real estate broker David Jones, State Senator Jim Libby, health care entrepreneur Owen McCarthy, former fitness executive Ben Midgley, and others. Bush emphasizes his experience in job creation, positioning himself as the only candidate with a proven track record of economic growth.
