A man has been arrested for sending death threats targeting conservative commentator Benny Johnson, his wife, and their four children, according to federal authorities. George Isbell Jr., 69, of San Diego, was charged with mailing threatening communications after a letter expressed violent intentions toward Johnson’s family.
Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the charges, stating that Isbell “hated” Johnson’s political views and sought his death. The letter, sent on September 18, referenced the recent assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, whom Isbell allegedly wished to see “strangled by the American flag” and “blown [the victim’s] head off.” It also threatened to kill Johnson and his family, describing them as needing “to be exterminated.”
Isbell was arrested on October 7 and faces up to five years in prison if convicted. Federal prosecutors emphasized that threats against individuals based on their political beliefs are unacceptable. Benny Johnson thanked President Trump, Bondi, and the Department of Justice for their response, calling the arrest a critical step in protecting his family.
The FBI and local law enforcement agencies collaborated on the investigation, with officials condemning the rise in politically motivated violence. The case highlights growing concerns over targeting individuals for their ideological positions, as Johnson vowed to continue advocating for conservative values despite the threat.
