A 21-year-old man in Michigan has been arrested following a deadly incident where he struck a family during an outdoor walk, fatally shooting their 3-year-old daughter before opening fire on the parents and a Good Samaritan.
According to Eaton County deputies, Alexander Lamar Banks Jr. drove into Cameron Smith and Paige Smith’s family near Green Meadows and Farmstead Lane in Delta Township around 5:30 p.m. on February 13. After hitting the group, Banks exited his vehicle and fired multiple shots at the victims, including a bystander who attempted to help.
The incident left Harlow Smith, the children’s 3-year-old daughter, pronounced dead at the scene. Both parents, Cameron and Paige Smith, were hospitalized in stable condition. A 72-year-old woman identified as Barb—who intervened to assist the family—was also taken to a hospital in critical condition after being severely injured during the attack.
Banks Jr., who has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder, four counts of felony firearm offenses, three counts of assault with intent to murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle, was apprehended by Eaton County deputies with assistance from Michigan State Police.
All victims were transported to area hospitals for treatment following the incident. A GoFundMe page has been established to support the Smith family’s medical expenses and funeral costs for their daughter.
