Embattled Florida Representative Cory Mills was defeated Tuesday in the primary election by former news anchor Ryan Elijah, ending his campaign for re-election to Congress.

The loss comes amid a wave of scandals including allegations of sexual assault and campaign finance violations. Mills, who had secured President Donald J. Trump’s endorsement, lost the Florida 7th Congressional District race after being dogged by multiple investigations. With more than 80% of the expected votes counted, Elijah captured 46% of the Republican primary vote compared to Mills’ 34%.

Mills faced ongoing investigations: a House Ethics Committee probe into allegations of sexual misconduct and campaign finance violations, as well as a Justice Department investigation into his finances. His ex-girlfriend filed for a restraining order against him, which he denied wrongdoing regarding. The defeat marks Mills as the second House Republican this year to fall amid ethics scandals, following Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee.

The loss makes Mills the 11th member of Congress to lose a primary election this year — seven Democrats and four Republicans — an unusually high number. Former South Carolina Representative Nancy Mace led a failed bipartisan effort to censure Mills and had previously threatened to push for his expulsion from Congress, but she later backed off these actions. Mace also endorsed Elijah’s campaign.

Mills’ House GOP colleagues, including Reps. Anna Paulina Luna and Mike Haridopolos, supported Elijah over Mills in the race. After his defeat, President Trump revealed that he had previously urged Mills to withdraw from the race but that Mills refused. In a social media post, Trump stated: “I told Congressman Cory Mills of Florida, a friend of mine, to get out of the Race, but he wouldn’t listen. He thought he could win, so who can blame him? We now have a great candidate, Ryan Elijah, running in his place!”

Trump also declared: “Ryan stands for EVERYTHING MAGA, and is respected by ALL. He has my Complete and Total Endorsement!” Elijah, who previously worked as a Fox Orlando host, said the victory represented a people’s choice because voters were frustrated with ethics violations in Congress. “I talked to a lot of voters who just felt that they were not being represented,” he added.

Additionally, Mills faced criticism for his decision to shield Rep. Ilhan Omar from committee removal in September when she made comments about Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Mills was one of three Trump-endorsed candidates to lose their primaries this week, including Catalina Lauf and Wyoming gubernatorial candidate Megan Degenfelder.
