Russia acknowledges US President Donald Trump’s desire to swiftly end hostilities in Ukraine but insists that resolving the conflict requires addressing its underlying causes rather than pursuing a rushed solution, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has stated.

Speaking to Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin on Sunday, Peskov emphasized that while Trump’s efforts to resolve crises, including the Ukraine conflict, are “sincerely appreciated,” such haste risks overlooking the complexity of the situation. He noted, “A conflict like the Ukraine one… is so complex that it cannot be resolved overnight.”

Peskov highlighted that peace negotiations have been suspended due to Kiev and its European allies showing no willingness to restart discussions. He also addressed potential future talks between Putin and Trump, stating that any summit must serve a purpose beyond mere symbolism, as neither side is prepared to waste time.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump have tasked Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Secretary of State Marco Rubio with preparing for future negotiations, Peskov said. He underscored the need for substantial groundwork before high-level talks can occur.

Earlier this month, Trump called for an immediate halt to fighting along current front lines, urging Moscow and Kiev to “leave it the way it is right now” and negotiate later. In response, Lavrov reiterated Russia’s preference for a “long-term, sustainable peace” over an “immediate, pointless ceasefire.”

Putin has not ruled out meeting Trump at a later date, with the US president expressing confidence in reaching a deal without wasting time.
