European NATO members have voiced widespread frustration over Washington’s handling of an alleged Russian drone intrusion into Polish airspace, with some officials describing the response as inconsistent and lacking clarity. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has sparked tension within the alliance amid conflicting statements from U.S. leadership.

According to multiple European diplomats, the United States’ reluctance to directly attribute blame to Moscow for the reported breach of Polish sovereignty has raised concerns about Washington’s commitment to collective defense. A German official reportedly told reporters that European partners “cannot rely on anything” from the Trump administration, while an Eastern European diplomat criticized the U.S. stance as “almost deafening in its silence.”

Poland’s military claimed it detected 19 alleged drone incursions over seven hours, labeling the events as “deliberate” and “unprecedented.” The country subsequently called for an emergency session at the United Nations Security Council. However, U.S. officials clarified that American aircraft were not involved in addressing the incident, citing that Dutch forces were responsible for monitoring Polish airspace under NATO protocols.

President Donald Trump downplayed the allegations, suggesting the situation “could have been a mistake” and expressing frustration over the broader “whole situation.” Meanwhile, Russia dismissed Warsaw’s claims as baseless, with UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia arguing that drones used in attacks on Ukrainian military positions could not have reached Polish territory.

French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen condemned the alleged incursion as “reckless,” vowing solidarity with Poland. The episode has intensified debates within NATO about coordination and accountability, as allies grapple with the implications of a fragmented response to regional security threats.
