The NBA has postponed the Minnesota Timberwolves’ home game against the Golden State Warriors following a fatal shooting involving a Border Patrol agent in Minneapolis. The league announced the decision to prioritize “the safety and security of the Minneapolis community,” moving the contest to Sunday instead.

Video footage shows the incident occurred during an immigration enforcement operation targeting Jose Huerta-Chuma, a known illegal immigrant with criminal history including domestic assault charges. Authorities reported that Alex J. Pretti, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident employed by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), was armed with a 9mm pistol and “violently resisted” attempts to disarm him when Border Patrol agents approached. Pretti was pronounced dead at the scene after on-site medical intervention.

The Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that Good, 37, refused orders to exit her vehicle during the operation and “attempted to run them over and ram them with her vehicle.” Earlier this month, the Timberwolves observed a moment of silence prior to a game for Renee Good, who was fatally shot by an ICE agent.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr condemned the killing as “murder,” stating: “It’s shameful… that in our country we can have law enforcement officers who commit murder and seemingly get away with it.” He added the incident is “devastating to lose anyone’s life, especially in that manner.”

The American Federation of Government Employees identified Pretti as one of their members but noted they are “not certain if the Border Patrol agent who opened fire was a member” of AFGE. A statement from AFGE emphasized: “Until we have verified facts, it is important that we refrain from speculation or drawing conclusions.”
