A North Carolina state lawmaker was arrested Wednesday and faces multiple sex-related charges. Cecil Brockman, a Democrat representing Guilford County in the North Carolina House of Representatives, was charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a child and two counts of statutory rape involving individuals aged 13 to 15.

Brockman is being held without bond at the High Point Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday. A magistrate’s order denying bail cited his position as a state representative, noting he has “abundant resources to aid in his flight from prosecution.” The document also stated Brockman has attempted to contact the victim, including using his status to “locate the juvenile in the hospital.”

The lawmaker’s legislative assistant did not respond to requests for comment. Democratic Gov. Josh Stein described the charges as “extremely serious and deeply troubling,” stating that Brockman “cannot effectively serve his constituents” and should resign immediately. House Minority Leader Robert Reives called the allegations “serious” and said, “If true, would disqualify him from public office.”

The North Carolina Democratic Party initially demanded Brockman’s immediate resignation, citing the “profound seriousness of these criminal charges.” House Speaker Destin Hall also urged his resignation, calling the charges “shocking and extremely serious.” Reives later emphasized that Brockman “must resign immediately” as the situation unfolds.
