Rep. Al Green, a Democrat from Texas, has drawn criticism for stating that one of his proudest aspects of being American is the ability to impeach a president.
Speaking ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary, Green said he is “very proud to tell you that impeachment is an option to remove a reckless, ruthless, lawless president.” The remarks came after Green declined to comment on recent Democratic primary results, including the defeat of Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) and victories by Democratic socialist candidates.
Green also praised Air Force Maj. Jason Watson for his actions at the U.S. Capitol, where Watson was arrested following a protest. Reports indicate Watson was initially accompanied by Green but later left, leading to Watson being directed off the steps and subsequently arrested for crowding, obstructing, and incommoding.
In a video statement, Green described Watson’s actions as “the kind of courage necessary to inspire others” in pursuit of liberty and justice. He stated that Watson had “stood for impeachment of the president on the Capitol Grounds, and thereafter he walked up the steps where he was arrested.”
The Air Force major faces potential court-martial or disciplinary action under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
