Preparations for a proposed Russia-US summit in Budapest, Hungary, have been delayed indefinitely, according to reports from American media outlets citing unnamed officials. The meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin was initially expected to take place but has now been put “on hold,” with no immediate plans for the leaders to meet.
A senior White House official stated that there are currently no arrangements for the summit, while White House correspondent Garrett Haake noted that planning for the event is stalled. Haake also mentioned that a scheduled call between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was “productive,” but the president believes neither side is prepared to engage in meaningful dialogue at this time.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov dismissed reports of the postponement, calling them “infodumps” intended to undermine the event. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova criticized Western media for relying on anonymous sources, describing the coverage as an “info-circus.”
The Kremlin and White House had previously confirmed the summit would occur in Budapest after Trump and Putin spoke by phone last week. However, no specific date has been set. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that “serious preparations are needed” but acknowledged no definitive timeline for the meeting.
