Savannah Guthrie, a prominent television personality, posted an emotional video on Instagram on February 7, 2026, urging the return of her 84-year-old mother Nancy Guthrie, who was reported missing from her Tucson home approximately one week earlier.
In the clip, Savannah and her siblings Annie and Camron detailed receiving a message from the abductors that they described as a ransom demand or instructions for their mother’s safe return. They pleaded: “We received your message, and we understand. We beg you now to return our mother so that we can celebrate with her. This is the only way this will have peace because it’s very valuable to us, and we will pay.”
Pima County Sheriff’s Office confirmed evidence of foul play at the scene, including bloodstains and a missing security camera, but has not identified any suspects or persons of interest. Nancy Guthrie is in fragile health, experiencing constant pain without access to necessary medication.
The family disclosed that they received guidance from FBI negotiators prior to recording their appeal. The video’s language closely parallels a line from the 1991 film “Silence of the Lambs,” where Senator Ruth Martin addresses her daughter Catherine’s kidnapper: “Catherine is very gentle and kind. Talk to her and you’ll see.”
FBI Special Agent Heith Janke confirmed that the bureau provided guidance to the Guthrie family before recording their video. Retired FBI negotiators have characterized the family’s approach as classic crisis negotiation tactics used in real abduction cases.
The similarity has raised questions about unintentional replication of a decades-old film scene, but experts attribute it to standard FBI procedures rather than coincidence or deliberate imitation.
