Deputy White House Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller has issued a severe warning to Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and other officials accused of obstructing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations, stating they could face “seditious conspiracy” charges.

During a Fox News appearance, Miller emphasized that any state or local official who “conspires or engages in activity that unlawfully impedes federal law enforcement” would be held accountable. He highlighted the potential for criminal consequences, including up to 20 years in prison, for those who interfere with ICE’s duties.

Miller’s remarks come amid Pritzker’s efforts to position Illinois as a “safe haven” for undocumented individuals. The governor recently signed an executive order establishing a commission to monitor and “recommend accountability” for ICE agents’ actions. Pritzker has repeatedly criticized ICE, comparing its operations to Nazi Germany and accusing the agency of racial profiling.

Pritzker defended his stance, asserting that ICE’s enforcement tactics disproportionately target Black and Brown communities. He argued that such practices align with historical patterns of authoritarian regimes. However, he also stated Illinois would assist in deporting violent criminals if law enforcement possessed judicial warrants.

The governor’s comments have sparked debate over the balance between immigration enforcement and civil liberties, with Miller’s warnings underscoring the federal government’s resolve to counter perceived resistance.
