Doug Martin, a former All-Pro running back, has died at the age of 36. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers confirmed the news, describing his passing as “sudden and unexpected.” Martin spent the majority of his seven-year NFL career with the Buccaneers, where he became a fan favorite and one of the franchise’s most iconic players.

“From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise,” the team said in a statement. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and everyone whom Doug touched throughout his life.”

Martin, known for his physical playing style and nickname “Muscle Hamster,” amassed 5,356 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns over his NFL career. His rookie season in 2012 was particularly standout, as he rushed for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns while earning a Pro Bowl berth. At the time, he held the third-most yards from scrimmage by a rookie in NFL history.

The former Boise State star was selected 31st overall in the 2012 draft and became a key figure during his tenure with the Buccaneers. His best season came in 2015, when he rushed for 1,402 yards and six touchdowns while adding 33 receptions for 271 yards.

Martin’s cause of death has not been disclosed. After being released by the Bucs following six seasons, he played one final year with the Raiders before retiring due to injury.

Boise State Football paid tribute, calling him a “Bronco legend” and expressing grief over his passing. Martin finished his collegiate career with 3,431 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns, ranking third in school history for rushing touchdowns.
