President Trump has filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), accusing the global news outlet of defaming him through deliberate manipulation of his January 6, 2021 speech.
The legal action, officially submitted to federal court in Florida this evening, alleges that the BBC edited a clip of Trump’s remarks to omit his call for peaceful protest and instead frame his words within an “insurrection” narrative. According to the complaint, these alterations were designed to misrepresent the context of the president’s speech during the events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
The lawsuit seeks $5 billion in damages for defamation and $5 billion under Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, totaling $10 billion. Trump is represented by attorneys Alejandro Brito, Edward Paltzik, and Daniel Epstein.
A spokesperson for Trump’s legal team stated: “The formerly respected and now disgraced BBC defamed President Trump by intentionally, maliciously, and deceptively doctoring his speech in a brazen attempt to interfere in the 2024 Presidential Election. The BBC has a long pattern of deceiving its audience in coverage of President Trump, all in service of its own leftist political agenda.”
The BBC had previously issued an apology on November 13, stating: “While the BBC sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited, we strongly disagree there is a basis for a defamation claim.”
President Trump had threatened to sue the BBC last month unless it apologized and provided compensation. The broadcaster has since agreed not to re-air the documentary but refused to offer financial settlement.
