Two individuals climbed to the top of the Empire State Building on Wednesday, holding a banner that read, “When the power of love beats the power of love, the world knows peace.”

Viral footage captured the pair reaching the summit 1,454 feet above ground before initiating their descent. Police efforts were underway to secure them from the spire as they navigated the tower’s upper levels.

Roughly ten minutes later, the trespassers began descending the remainder of the spire. At a lower platform, one individual dropped to one knee and proposed to the other, who accepted with an embrace and kiss after removing her mask.

Terry Monahan, former NYPD chief of department and NBC New York contributor, noted that the individuals could face felony charges upon arrest. The incident began while spectators were milling about on the building’s observation deck, which was later cleared as police managed the situation. An NYPD helicopter responded to the scene, with the pair starting their descent at 12:35 p.m.
