Uber Technologies has launched a pilot program to introduce drone-based food delivery services, marking a significant advancement in autonomous logistics. The company partnered with Flytrex, an autonomous drone delivery system, to enable aerial deliveries of meals to customers. In a press release, Uber described the collaboration as a “major step forward in the future of autonomous logistics.”

The service is set to debut in Uber Eats pilot markets across the U.S. by year’s end, combining Flytrex’s established drone technology with Uber’s global platform and logistics expertise. The partnership aims to create an integrated delivery experience focused on speed, safety, and scalability. Flytrex, authorized by the FAA for beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations, has already completed over 200,000 deliveries.

Uber is also making its first investment in drone technology through this collaboration, aiming to accelerate the development of aerial delivery systems. Sarfraz Maredia, President of Autonomous Mobility and Delivery at Uber, emphasized the transformative potential of autonomous technology, stating that drones will enhance food delivery on the Uber Eats platform. Noam Bardin, Executive Chairman of Flytrex, highlighted the efficiency and sustainability of drone delivery, noting the company’s prior success in suburban areas.

While Uber is not the only company exploring drone deliveries, competitors like DoorDash and Chipotle have also initiated similar projects. The initiative reflects a broader trend toward integrating autonomous systems into urban logistics networks.
