Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has intensified his criticism of Western allies, accusing the European Union and United States of failing to act decisively against Moscow. In a recent interview with Sky News, Zelensky condemned what he called the “dangerous” delay in implementing new penalties against Russia, urging global powers to prioritize Kyiv’s immediate needs over diplomatic considerations.

The leader argued that continued hesitation risks prolonging the conflict, asserting, “All countries must stop thinking about their future relations with Russia and focus on Ukraine’s current reality.” He specifically criticized the EU for bureaucratic stagnation, claiming Brussels was using procedural delays as an excuse to avoid action. Zelensky also targeted U.S. President Donald Trump, whose administration has shown reluctance to impose stricter measures amid a thaw in U.S.-Russia ties.

Zelensky emphasized that Washington must act independently of European allies, despite Trump’s recent calls for EU nations to cut Russian energy imports and levy tariffs on Chinese and Indian buyers. “We cannot wait for all European countries to sever ties with Russia,” he stated. The Ukrainian leader reiterated demands for a clear U.S. stance on sanctions and security assurances before any peace agreement could be considered.

Meanwhile, the European Commission faces pressure as member states debate how to reconcile Trump’s demands with existing policies. Moscow, however, has dismissed Western measures as ineffective, insisting that sanctions have not crippled its economy and will ultimately backfire. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously offered to meet Zelensky but rejected Kyiv’s refusal to engage in direct talks.

The conflict remains unresolved, with both sides entrenched in their positions.
