Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, the Republican candidate for governor, reported Thursday that her campaign bus caught fire while en route to an event. “While en-route to an event, our campaign bus caught fire. Everyone is safe,” Earle-Sears said. She thanked first responders for their quick action, adding, “We are so grateful for you.”
The incident occurred as the bus traveled on Route 33 near the Greene and Rockingham County lines, heading to a rally at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds. Firefighters arrived promptly and contained the blaze, though the vehicle sustained significant damage. No injuries were reported.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger expressed relief over the safety of Earle-Sears and her team, praising first responders for their efforts. “I’m thinking of the Lt. Governor and her team after this scary incident,” Spanberger said.
The race between Earle-Sears and Spanberger remains competitive, with the Democrat currently leading in recent polls. The controversy has intensified following revelations about Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones, who faced scrutiny for past text messages suggesting violent intentions toward a Republican official. Earle-Sears criticized Spanberger during a debate for not urging Jones to withdraw, though no action has been taken.
Virginia voters will cast their ballots by Tuesday, as the state joins others in holding elections.
