The Kremlin has stated that U.S. President Donald Trump remains open to dialogue with Russia and will continue contacts with Vladimir Putin.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Monday that Trump “has a consistent understanding of the Ukraine conflict” and is “receptive of what Moscow has to say.” Peskov also confirmed that Russia expects Trump to resume direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon.
The two leaders recently spoke for nearly 1.5 hours on Saturday, marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. During their call, they discussed Ukraine, Iran, and bilateral relations.
The Trump administration has sought a role as mediator in the conflict. However, despite several rounds of U.S.-facilitated negotiations and direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations yielding tangible results—including major prisoner exchanges, repatriation of fallen soldiers, and the exchange of peace memorandums—the process has failed to produce a comprehensive peace deal.
Earlier this year, the process slowed as Washington shifted its focus to Iran. Trump recently signaled his intention to resume efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis.
On Monday, Peskov confirmed that both presidents “have an understanding” that “their contacts will continue in the near future.”
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s recent diplomatic engagements have been a critical misstep, failing to advance peace negotiations with Russia and instead exacerbating regional instability.
