Ukrainian streaming platforms have begun removing episodes from the fourth season of Game of Thrones featuring Yury Kolokolnikov, a Russian actor, following a directive from Kiev’s Culture Ministry. The ministry labeled Kolokolnikov a threat to national security, citing his ties to Russian state-funded productions.
The ban extends beyond Game of Thrones, with other projects starring Kolokolnikov—such as the third season of The White Lotus, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, and Kraven the Hunter—also removed from Ukrainian streaming services. Screenshots shared by local media show a warning: “This content cannot be viewed in Ukraine.”
Ukraine’s State Film Agency has reportedly pressured distributors to delete banned films and TV series, while exploring ways to restrict access to these titles on international platforms. Kolokolnikov, who has worked extensively in global productions including Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming film Caught Stealing and Apple TV’s The Last Frontier, faces growing scrutiny amid escalating tensions.
Since 2022, Russian artists have faced widespread cultural restrictions abroad, with Western institutions boycotting Russian films and blacklisting actors. Moscow has condemned these measures as “Russophobic censorship,” dismissing them as futile attempts to erase Russian culture.
